Bangladeshi Students Demand Interim Government Led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus

Naheed Islam mentioned that the students have already discussed the matter with Dr. Yunus: Report

Dhaka (Monitoring Desk):** Student leaders in Bangladesh have called for the establishment of an interim government under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. They have also released a draft outline for this proposed interim government.

According to foreign news agencies, student leaders Naheed Islam, Asif Mahmood, and Abubakar Mazumdar announced in a video message that the outline of the interim government, to be led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, will be released within the next 24 hours. Naheed Islam mentioned that the students have already discussed the matter with Dr. Yunus, who has expressed willingness to play a role in the interim government, with additional names to be announced later.

In a separate statement, Dr. Muhammad Yunus criticized Sheikh Hasina Wazed, stating that she had destroyed the legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and claimed that Bangladesh is now free from her rule. Bangladeshi President Mohammad Shahabuddin had previously indicated readiness to form an interim government comprising various political parties and civil society members during a meeting with military leaders. The military has been urged to halt ongoing looting and restore the rule of law.

Army Chief General Wakar-Uz-Zaman has also met with leaders of various political parties and civil society members, hinting at the formation of an interim government soon. He is expected to hold meetings with students and teachers as well.

Meanwhile, Indian media reports that the resigned Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, has applied for political asylum in the United Kingdom. Her sister, Sheikh Rehana, already holds British citizenship, and both sisters are currently in India. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Amir, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, stated that Begum Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, is expected to be released from prison at any moment.

It is noted that violence in Bangladesh has escalated, with 135 people killed in riots on Monday alone, and the death toll reaching 231 within two days. Despite Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s resignation and flight to India, the unrest has continued. Protesters in Dhaka have attacked Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan’s residence, looting property, while in Sherpur, angry individuals assaulted a jail, freeing 500 inmates.

In the meantime, Sheikh Hasina Wazed has been given residence in a secure, undisclosed location in India. According to Bangladeshi media, she is expected to stay in India until her asylum application in the UK is processed. Reports suggest that she may also meet her daughter Saima Wazed, who is residing in New Delhi. Earlier, Sheikh Hasina arrived in India via military helicopter, landing in Agartala. India has indicated its readiness to provide secure passage for Sheikh Hasina.
