New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): Former Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has claimed that the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh played a significant role in the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh.
In an interview with Indian TV, Shringla, who has also served as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, stated that the public, especially the youth, have expressed their frustration through protests against Hasina’s government. He attributed part of the unrest to the opposition parties BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Shringla suggested that the Jamaat-e-Islami, a radical and pro-Pakistan party, was particularly active during these protests and contributed to the violence. He added that external influences should not be ignored as they have impacted national security interests of both Bangladesh and India.
Regarding the potential asylum for Sheikh Hasina in India, Shringla noted that Hasina had previously lived in India from 1975 to 1979 following her father’s assassination. India has a history of providing refuge to neighboring political figures.
