Jaya Bachchan’s Name Sparks Controversy in Rajya Sabha
Just Jaya Bachchan would have been sufficient: Jaya Bachchan
Mumbai: Veteran actress and Indian politician Jaya Bachchan’s name has once again become a topic of debate in the Rajya Sabha. Last week, Jaya Bachchan expressed her displeasure over the inclusion of her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s name with hers during a parliamentary session.
During a session, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan addressed Jaya Bachchan as “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan Ji.” This prompted Jaya Bachchan to remind everyone that she has her own identity separate from her husband’s.
Jaya Bachchan voiced her frustration, stating, “Just Jaya Bachchan would have been sufficient. It seems like a new trend where women are only recognized by their husbands’ names, with no acknowledgment of their own achievements or identity.”
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar also referred to her as “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” In response, Jaya Bachchan asked him, “Do you know what Amitabh means?” Dhankhar suggested that she could change her name if she wished, noting that he himself had changed his name for electoral purposes in 1989.
Jaya Bachchan firmly stated, “I take pride in my name and also in Amitabh Bachchan. I value his accomplishments. This issue of names is a new drama that you people have started. I am very happy with my name.”
The debate highlights ongoing discussions about women’s identity and recognition in professional and public spheres, especially in contexts where a woman’s achievements may be overshadowed by her husband’s name.
Jaya Bachchan’s comments underscore broader societal issues related to gender and personal identity.
