On Wednesday, residents across Punjab, including Lahore, experienced significant earthquake tremors. According to a statement from the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.

Details of the Earthquake

Mazhar Hussain, spokesperson for PDMA, confirmed to Dawn.com that the earthquake occurred at 7:28 AM, with its epicenter near DG Khan (Shadi Wala). The depth of the earthquake was reported to be 10 kilometers. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also corroborated these details.

“The earthquake’s magnitude was recorded at 5.7 on the Richter scale,” said Mazhar Hussain. “The epicenter was near DG Khan (Shadi Wala), and its depth was 10 kilometers.”

Response and Monitoring

In response to the earthquake, the Punjab administration is actively examining buildings affected by the tremors. PDMA has heightened its alert status to manage potential aftershocks.

“District Emergency Operation Centers across Punjab, including PDMA’s Provincial Control Room, are on 24/7 alert,” the spokesperson added. “Damage reports can be submitted via PDMA’s helpline at 1129.”

Recent Seismic Activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

This earthquake follows a separate seismic event that occurred a day earlier in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On Tuesday, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, predominantly affecting Swat. According to PMD, the quake struck at 8:20 AM with a depth of 151 kilometers, and its epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush Mountain range, an area known for its seismic activity.

“The tremors were felt across Swat and nearby areas, causing temporary panic among residents,” reported the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

Government Measures

The government has initiated immediate response measures to address the situation. Emergency teams are deployed, and damage assessment operations are underway. PDMA has advised the public to remain cautious and report any emergency situations to the designated helplines.

These recent seismic activities underscore the importance of preparedness and rapid response in mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
