Karachi: Details of the Phase-II subsidy scheme for the purchase of electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders have been released.

According to documents, the scheme aims to reduce fuel costs, protect the environment, and promote local industry. In the first phase, 41,000 vehicles were targeted, with over 269,000 applications received, out of which 41,000 were selected. So far, 1,334 electric bikes have been delivered, and subsidies are being transferred to beneficiaries’ accounts.

In the second phase, a subsidy of Rs80,000 per electric bike will be provided, with an additional 100,000 bikes to be launched within three months. Government employees in Grade 16 and below will be eligible for interest-free bikes or rickshaws, requiring an initial payment of Rs10,000, with the remaining amount deducted in installments from salaries.

A new application method has also been introduced based on a first-come, first-served basis, while maintaining provincial quotas. Fleet operators will also be included. Additionally, 600 top-performing government college students will receive free electric bikes in Phase II.

Third-party verification will continue to prevent fraud. This year, 116,000 electric bikes and 3,170 rickshaws/loaders will be distributed. Fuel savings of 8.6 million liters are expected within three months. The expanded Phase-II scheme has been approved by the Economic Coordination Committee.
