Lapid, Bennett Join Forces to Challenge Netanyahu in Elections
Opposition leaders unite ahead of crucial October vote
April 26, 2026: Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has announced a political alliance with former prime minister Naftali Bennett in a bid to challenge incumbent premier Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Lapid confirmed that both leaders will contest the October elections on a joint list, with a formal announcement expected soon. The alliance will merge Lapid’s party Yesh Atid with Bennett’s new political platform, aiming to consolidate opposition forces against Netanyahu’s government.
In a statement, Lapid described the move as “the first step in repairing the State of Israel,” adding that the merger would unify efforts to bring political change and stability.
Both Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett have been vocal critics of Netanyahu’s leadership, particularly his handling of ongoing conflicts since October 2023. Lapid recently termed a ceasefire agreement with Iran a “political disaster,” reflecting growing opposition to government policies.
The two leaders previously formed a coalition government in 2021, which ended in 2022, paving the way for Benjamin Netanyahu to return to power. Since then, both figures have positioned themselves as key challengers to Netanyahu’s leadership.
Opinion polls suggest that Bennett, a former military officer and successful entrepreneur, is currently the strongest candidate to defeat Netanyahu. Known for his right-wing stance, including support for Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Bennett appeals to a broad segment of voters, particularly younger demographics.
Lapid, a centrist politician and former journalist, founded Yesh Atid in 2012, which has since become one of Israel’s leading political parties. He has served as prime minister briefly and continues to play a central role in the opposition.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the Likud party, has confirmed he will head his party’s list in the upcoming elections. At 76, Netanyahu remains Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, with over 18 years in office across multiple terms.
The upcoming election is expected to be a closely contested battle, with the newly formed alliance aiming to reshape Israel’s political landscape.
