UK ambassador in Washington says US “special relationship” is with Israel, not Britain

The remarks were reportedly made during a recorded discussion with students at an event

Washington: The UK’s ambassador to the United States, Sir Christian Turner, has said that America’s “special relationship” is not with Britain, but rather with Israel, according to a report published by a British newspaper.

The remarks were reportedly made during a recorded discussion with students at an event held in mid-February this year.

During the conversation, Sir Christian Turner also criticised aspects of the US political system, referring to the unresolved accountability surrounding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associates, suggesting that they have not been brought to justice.

He further stated that he did not agree with the commonly held view that the United States and the United Kingdom share a “special relationship,” saying he dislikes the phrase, although he acknowledged that historical ties between the two countries remain strong.

Following the report, the UK Foreign Office issued a clarification, stating that the ambassador’s comments represented his personal views and do not reflect official government policy.
